Although the Central Asia is truely
considered as the kingdom of Reptiles, the big cities are not
suitable for them. On the territory of Tashkent inhabit
3 species of snakes. The most widely - distributed species is
Cymnodactylus russowi, which lives in old earthen
and modern stone buildings. This little lizard is completely
harmless, easily moves on vertical walls and ceilings, prefers to
live in garrets, cool cellars, warehouses. It eats small insects and
spiders. On vacant lots, city cemeteries, on outskirts sometimes
it is possible to meet big (about 1 metre long) apodal lizard, which
remind snake by its appearance. This is Ophisaurus
apodus It inhabits grassy thickets, eats bugs, other lizards and
glass hoppers. Sometime his victim can become Ablepharus deserti. This not very big, bright lizard with
short legs and long body can be met in Tashkent almost in every
place, where the natural grassy vegetation is still saved. It is
famous by the ability "to loose" its own tail when is dander. The
tail continues to move, confusing enemy. Among the snake of our
city the typical are 2 types of sledge runner, which can be met, in
districts with one floor buildings. These big snakes, achieving 1,5
metres in their length, inhabit cellars, garrets, eat small birds
and rodents. They are harmless for
